If you have completed your studies in India and plan to study abroad, you must first convert your grades from SGPA to GPA. SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is commonly used in Indian universities and colleges, while GPA is used worldwide, mostly in US universities. This blog will help you understand everything about SGPA and GPA. Letโs begin!
SGPA, aka Semester Grade Point Average, calculates a studentโs performance over a semester. SGPA is a weighted average of secured grades in all the courses taken in a semester.
Calculating SGPA takes into account grade and credit points. Hereโs how to calculate your SGPA:
SGPA = (Sum of Grade Points ร Credit Points) รท Total Credit Points
Grade points are the numerical equivalent of letter grades, ranging from 0 to 10. Credit points are weightage allocated to each course. Hereโs an example calculation:
Step 1: Suppose a student has five courses with the following grades and credit points.
| Course | Grade Point | Credit Point |
| Course A | 9 | 3 |
| Course B | 8 | 3 |
| Course C | 10 | 4 |
| Course D | 6 | 2 |
| Course E | 8 | 3 |
Step 2: Multiply grade points by credit points.
| Course | Grade x Credit | Total |
| Course A | 9 x 3 | 27 |
| Course B | 8 x 3 | 24 |
| Course C | 10 x 4 | 40 |
| Course D | 6 x 2 | 12 |
| Course E | 8 x 3 | 24 |
Step 3: Add the total together: 27 + 24 + 40 + 12 + 24 = 127
Step 4: Add the credits: 3 + 3 + 4 + 2 + 3 = 15
Step 5: To calculate the SGPA, divide the total grade points by the total credits. SGPA = 127 รท 15 = 8.467.
Your SGPA for the semester is 8.467.
GPA, aka Grade Point Average, is a system used to calculate a studentโs performance and academic achievement. GPA is used worldwide but is most recognized in the USA.ย
GPA is calculated by the value/points of a grade with semester Credit hours for each grade. Hereโs how to calculate your GPA:
| Class | Grade = Points | Credit Hours | Points x Credit Hours |
| Class A | A = 4 | 4 | 16 |
| Class B | A = 4 | 2 | 8 |
| Class C | C = 3 | 4 | 12 |
| Class D | B = 2 | 4 | 8 |
| Class E | B = 4 | 2 | 8 |
| Total | 16 | 52 | |
According to the above table, the total hours is 16 while the total points are 52. To calculate the GPA, we will divide the total points (52) by the total hours (16).
Our final GPA is 3.25 (Grade B).
Use the formula:
GPA=Totalย Gradeย Points/Totalย Creditย Hoursโ
Refer to the table below to convert your GPA to grade points and numerical grade:
| Grade | Grade Points | Numerical Grade |
| A+ | 4 | 97 – 100 |
| A | 4 | 94 – 96 |
| A- | 3.7 | 90 – 93 |
| B+ | 3.3 | 87 – 89 |
| B | 3 | 84 – 86 |
| B- | 2.7 | 80 – 83 |
| C+ | 2.3 | 77 – 79 |
| C | 2 | 74 – 76 |
| C- | 1.7 | 70 – 73 |
| D+ | 1.3 | 67 – 69 |
| D | 1 | 64 – 66 |
| D- | 0.7 | 60 – 63 |
| F | 0 | 0 – 59 |
SGPA is calculated on a 10.0 scale, while the GPA is calculated based on a 4.0 scale. To convert SGPA to GPA, follow these steps:
Step 1: Use the formula
GPA = SGPA ร 4 / 10
Step 2: Convert each semesterโs SGPA using the above formula. Hereโs an example for you:
| SGPA (10.0) | GPA (4.0) | Calculation |
| 10.0 | 4.0 | 10.0 ร 0.4 = 4.0 |
| 9.5 | 3.8 | 9.5 ร 0.4 = 3.8 |
| 9.0 | 3.6 | 9.0 ร 0.4 = 3.6 |
| 8.5 | 3.4 | 8.5 ร 0.4 = 3.4 |
| 8.0 | 3.2 | 8.0 ร 0.4 = 3.2 |
| 7.5 | 3.0 | 7.5 ร 0.4 = 3.0 |
| 7.0 | 2.8 | 7.0 ร 0.4 = 2.8 |
| 6.5 | 2.6 | 6.5 ร 0.4 = 2.6 |
| 6.0 | 2.4 | 6.0 ร 0.4 = 2.4 |
| 5.5 | 2.2 | 5.5 ร 0.4 = 2.2 |
| 5.0 | 2.0 | 5.0 ร 0.4 = 2.0 |
| 4.5 | 1.8 | 4.5 ร 0.4 = 1.8 |
| 4.0 | 1.6 | 4.0 ร 0.4 = 1.6 |
| 3.5 | 1.4 | 3.5 ร 0.4 = 1.4 |
| 3.0 | 1.2 | 3.0 ร 0.4 = 1.2 |
Based on the above table, you can understand how to calculate SGPA to GPA.
As mentioned above, SGPA is calculated on a 10.0 scale, while the GPA is calculated based on a 4.0 scale.
Use this Formula:
SGPA=(GPAร10)/4

An SGPA of 8 or above is considered good for studying abroad. However, it also depends on the country and program you are interested in. Some programs may require a higher SGPA for admission.
A 6.5 SGPA roughly converts into 60% – 65% using the formula, Percentage = (SGPAโ0.5)ร10 or Percentage = SGPAร10.
Most top universities accept a 3.0 GPA (on a scale of 4.0) for admission. However, check the eligibility requirements of your chosen university and program, as the requirements may vary.
To study abroad, you need a minimum of 75% to 85% to get admission to top universities. Some universities do require a higher percentage depending on the course.
Admission to the USA universities with 60% may be possible as some universities require a minimum of 60% marks. However, getting admission can be easy for you if you have an amazing academic record and good work experience.
